Limbs

They took all the prisoners artificial limbs away too. These legs made me feel as if they were trying to run away and escape from the atrocities.

The room with the shaven hair from all the female prisoners, weighing several tons, was equally shocking. Nothing was wasted and the human hair was used to make mats and rugs.

I can't believe all of this stuff is still there! Even the hair?

Is this an exhibit that was set up or is this how stuff has been for so many years....amazing....makes me realise I had a really good day.

Hi - I'm glad you made it to Auschwitz: it is an overwhelming experience, isn't it? I remember just sitting down and weeping when I saw the hair. Clive James wrote a marvellous song, sung by his recording partner Pete Atkin, called "A Hill of Little Shoes" which encapsulates the experience. Go to peteatkin.com for details.

Thanks Rob - found the words and now trying to work out how to download the music. Interesting website. The words say it all as it was the childrens' belongings that impacted so much.

Had a lovely time and adored Krakow including the beer and the cherry vodka (Yum). Visited the universities, ate cheesecake and strudel and potatoes fried in fat, bacon and onion (Double Yum).

Went down the salt-mines and will never forgive the person who didn't tell me that to get to the surface again we had to use the original miners' cages squashed in together like sardines with no lights. I screamed like a baby!

I'll see if I can manage an MP3 of the song, but that will have to be when I get home. Stay tuned!
